Analysis: General manager Jon Daniels said Wednesday that Benson will be a starter, a move that pushes right-hander Scott Feldman to the bullpen. Benson is 2-0 with a 4.76 ERA in five spring games. Benson, the No. 1 overall pick by Pittsburgh in 1996, missed 2007 after surgery to repair a torn right rotator cuff. He was 1-4 with a 5.52 ERA in 11 starts last year for Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia's Triple-A team, before the Phillies released him Aug. 30.

Analysis: Benson last pitched in the majors in 2006, going 11-12 with a 4.82 ERA for Baltimore. He has a career record of 68-73 with a 4.34 ERA with the Pirates, Orioles and New York Mets. He missed the 2007 season after having surgery to repair a torn right rotator cuff. Benson has a clause in his contract that if he is not on the big league roster by May 5 he could become a free agent.
