Analysis: Strasburg was hurt during a workout Thursday, and an MRI exam showed inflammation. He is scheduled to travel to Los Angeles on Friday to be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum. The Nationals issued a news release saying Strasburg's injury "is not considered serious."
11/20/2009 Omar Vizquel, SS (Tex) The Chicago White Sox are closing in on a contract agreement with Vizquel.

Analysis: The deal could be announced as soon as Monday, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not commented. Vizquel, who will be 43 in April, has played 21 major league seasons. Last year he was in a utility role with the Texas Rangers, playing shortstop, third base and second base while appearing in 62 games. He batted .266.
11/20/2009 Omar Vizquel, SS (Tex) White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has confirmed to the Chicago Sun-Times that the club has talked to Vizquel.

Analysis: Vizquel has indicated he wants to come back for a 22nd season in the majors.
11/20/2009 John Grabow, RP (ChC) The Chicago Cubs and Grabow have agreed to a two-year contract.

Analysis: The 31-year-old Grabow combined to go 3-0 with a 3.36 ERA last season in a career-high 75 relief appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cubs. He pitched 30 games for the Cubs after he was traded from the Pirates along with lefty Tom Gorzellany for pitchers Jose Ascanio and Kevin Hart, and minor league infielder Josh Harrison on July 30.
11/19/2009 Carlos Pena, 1B (TB) The Rays reinstated Pena from the 60-day disabled list on Thursday.

Analysis: He was sidelined most of the final month of the season with two broken fingers on his left hand.
11/19/2009 Aaron Heilman, RP (Ari) Heilman has been acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Chicago Cubs for two minor league prospects.

Analysis: The 31-year-old right-hander was 4-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 70 appearances last season, striking out 65 and walking 34. He spent six seasons with the New York Mets before he was traded to Seattle last December, then dealt to the Cubs a month later.
11/19/2009 Tim Lincecum, SP (SF) Lincecum has won the NL Cy Young Award, becoming the first repeat winner in the major leagues since Randy Johnson was voted the prize four straight times from 1999-2002.

Analysis: Lincecum led the NL with 261 strikeouts and tied for the league lead with four complete games and two shutouts. Only 10 points separated Lincecum and St. Louis pitchers Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright in one of the closest ballots in the award's history.
11/17/2009 Sergio Mitre, SP (NYY) The New York Yankees have declined a $1.25 million option on Mitre. The right-hander was not on the Yankees' postseason roster. Mitre now becomes eligible for salary arbitration.

Analysis: The 28-year-old Mitre had elbow ligament replacement surgery in July 2008 and agreed to a minor league contract with the Yankees last offseason. He sat out the first 50 games while serving a suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.
11/17/2009 Zack Greinke, SP (KC) Greinke has won the American League Cy Young Award, beating out Felix Hernandez after a spectacular season short on wins but long on domination.

Analysis: Greinke had a 16-8 record with a 2.16 ERA for the Kansas City Royals. He tossed six complete games and struck out 242.
11/16/2009 Eric Bruntlett, 2B (Phi) Bruntlett, who scored the winning run in the final game of the 2008 World Series, became a free agent after refusing a minor league assignment from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Analysis: Bruntlett batted just .171 (18-for-105) in this season after hitting .217 in 212 at-bats in '08. Bruntlett got more playing time last year because of an ankle injury to shortstop Jimmy Rollins in April and because he was a late-inning defensive replacement for former left fielder Pat Burrell.
11/16/2009 Ramon Hernandez, C (Cin) Hernandez agreed Monday to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Reds after Cincinnati declined his $8 million option. The deal includes a $3.25 million option for 2011 that would become guaranteed if Hernandez plays in 120 games next season. If he plays in fewer, the Reds do not have the ability to exercise the option.

Analysis: Hernandez played in only 81 games last season because of a knee injury that required surgery in July. He hit .258 with 13 doubles, five homers and 37 RBIs. He also started at first base 18 times when Joey Votto was sidelined.
11/16/2009 Andrew Bailey, RP (Oak) Bailey is the American League Rookie of the Year. He was selected first on 13 of 28 ballots and finished with 88 points.

Analysis: An All-Star in his first major league season, Bailey proved that general manager Billy Beane can spot talent for the low-budget A's. Bailey, a Staten Island native, went 6-3 with a team-best 1.84 ERA and converted 26 of 30 saves.
11/16/2009 Chris Coghlan, LF (Fla) Coghlan is the National League Rookie of the Year.

Analysis: Coghlan edged Philadelphia Phillies pitcher J.A. Happ in a close race, receiving 17 first-place votes and 105 points Monday in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He hit .321 and scored 84 runs in 128 games for Florida.
11/13/2009 Jack Wilson, SS (Sea) Wilson and the Seattle Mariners agreed Friday to a $10 million, two-year contract. The 30-year-old was acquired from Pittsburgh on July 29 along with pitcher Ian Snell for infielder Ronny Cedeno, catcher Jeff Clement and three minor league pitchers.

Analysis: Wilson hit .224 with one home run in 31 games. He missed extended time due to a sore hamstring and bruised right heel. Wilson gets $5 million in each of the next two seasons and can earn $250,000 a year in performance bonuses: $50,000 for 450 plate appearances, and $100,000 each for 500 and 550 plate appearances.
11/13/2009 Vernon Wells, CF (Tor) Wells has had surgery on his left wrist and is expected to be ready for spring training.

Analysis: The team said Friday that doctors repaired cartilage in his wrist, which he broke diving to make a catch against the Indians in 2008. Wells struggled through one of his worst seasons as a pro in 2009, batting just .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs.
11/13/2009 Rafael Betancourt, RP (Col) The Rockies have declined a $5 million option on Betancourt, a key setup man as the Rockies won the NL wild-card race.

Analysis: Betancourt can now become a free agent. Colorado general manager Dan O'Dowd says the team will continue to negotiate with the reliever.
11/13/2009 Braden Looper, SP (Mil) The Brewers have declined their $6.5 million mutual option on Looper, electing to pay the pitcher a $1 million buyout. The team had until Saturday to decide whether to exercise the option on the 35-year-old right-hander, who now becomes eligible for free agency.

Analysis: After signing with the Brewers as a free agent on Feb. 12, he went 14-7 with a 5.22 ERA. He made at least 30 starts for the third straight season and established a career high in wins, which led the team. He also set a franchise record with 39 homers allowed, which led the majors, while also topping big league pitchers in runs (123).
11/12/2009 Wilson Betemit, 1B (KC) The Royals have agreed to terms with infielder Wilson Betemit, a 28-year-old infielder who spent last season in the Chicago White Sox organization. The Royals signed the switch-hitting Betemit to a minor league contract.

Analysis: Betemit opened last season on the White Sox roster and hit .200 in 20 games, playing first and third base. In 72 games with Triple-A Charlotte in 2009, he hit .241 with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs.
11/12/2009 Tim Hudson, SP (Atl) Hudson has agreed to a new three-year contract with the Atlanta Braves.

Analysis: Hudson could have returned to the Braves under a $12 million mutual option, but the two sides focused on talks for a longer deal after the right-hander showed he had overcome major elbow surgery. They worked out a deal through 2012, with a club option for 2013. Terms of the new contract are not yet available.
11/11/2009 Jason Varitek, C (Bos) Varitek has exercised his $3 million option to stay with the Red Sox. Boston declined to exercise its $5 million club option on Monday, and Varitek then had two days to decide whether to exercise his player option at the lower price.

Analysis: The 37-year-old was Boston’s starting catcher for nine of 10 seasons through 2008, except in 2001 when he was limited to 51 games because of injury. He was the regular last season until Boston obtained Victor Martinez from Cleveland on July 31. He threw out just 10 of 118 runners attempting to steal this year.
